One of the principles of operation of the RAS is to treat the wastewater produced by the aquarium for reuse in the system. In RAS, water quality management is an important aspect of fish production.

RAS wastewater contains nitrogenous waste, suspended inorganic particles, and many bacterial flocs derived from leftover feed, fish feces, dead fish, and bacteria that degrade water quality and can be toxic to aquatic organisms. In this regard, in order to prevent and provide a suitable and sustainable living environment for marine organisms, effective water treatment technologies are required to remove the above substances.
The RAS wastewater treatment process is done in different stages. First, suspended and dissolved organic solids are removed using settling, settling chamber, screen filter, or foam fractionator equipment. Second, nitrogen-containing compounds are removed by microbial treatment through the nitrification process. Afterwards, water conditioning, such as disinfection and oxygenation, and a carbon dioxide (CO2) stripping process take place. Finally, the treated water is returned to the fish tank for reuse.
